The Importance of Training

In today’s world, we can not simply rely on our past experiences and training. Security, especially cybersecurity, is constantly evolving and changing.  We must continue to train and learn how to do our jobs better than ever before. Having a quality training program is not only just for employees, but it is also beneficial to the employer as well.

Take this chart showing the effectiveness of driver training within a police department as an example. This shows the drastic difference between having training and not having training. This is just one example of how training can be beneficial.

There are many benefits to keeping your training up to date and continuous. Seeking out additional training can help you keep up with the changing trends and tactics in your field. This will help strengthen your skills and knowledge. It can also make you more desirable to both your current and future employers. Continuing to build your portfolio by increasing your training makes you more desirable in career advancement.  It allows you to earn certifications or similar, that will earn more income, or other incentives, in a lot of companies. Another benefit of training is it helps you avoid complacency in your job.  Up to date training also gives you the tools to keep up your responses to the changing times. You will probably learn something new. There is even a chance you will find a new interest to focus on.

A continuous training program has many benefits for you as an employer. It can help you identify the strengths and weaknesses of your employees. A strong training program can not only increase the loyalty and happiness of your employees, but it can also attract great employees that know they will get the training needed for their career goals and performance. Another benefit is that a good training program will highlight areas that need improvement, which will lead to better performance standards.  Keeping your training constant and up to date, shows your employees that you care enough to give them the tools needed for their jobs. It also helps protect them, and you, legally by showing that you are proactive in keeping your company current with its training.

So how do you decide if the course or program is the correct one? First, you must ask yourself, “Am I going to learn something in this course?” Is this training going to help me to achieve my goal? Next, you must decide if the course will be beneficial to you, your company, or both. Then you should determine if the cost is worth the training. Depending on the length, location, and type of training it is, you should know if you can afford to either travel or miss time from work.  Does the training fit your schedule and learning style?

Continuous training has benefits that will help both employers and employees. By continuing to seek out training opportunities, and encouraging employees to do the same, we can develop an environment conducive to learning and succeeding.  We must not only give the tools and training needed for ourselves, but also our employees. As an individual, you should continuously seek out training opportunities to increase your knowledge base in your career field. We should always strive to learn something new every day.
